Sweden adopted the m/96 in 1896 as its standard infantry rifle, a Mauser design chambered for the 6.5x55mm cartridge. The first 40,000 rifles were made by Mauser in Germany between 1896 and 1899. Production then moved to Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori, which built m/96 rifles from 1899 to 1936, and Husqvarna added about 20,000 more between 1942 and 1944. Swedish armorers inletted a brass disc into the right side of the buttstock to record each rifle's condition. Its largest sector carries the measured calibre of the barrel, a second records the sight correction needed for the flatter m/41 ammunition, and the last notes any pitting found in the bore. Inspection officers stamped their initials on the left side of the receiver next to the serial number, which is why this rifle carries H.K. beside its number.
