Lot Notes

This Ishapore 2A1 rifle was built at Rifle Factory Ishapore in 1966 and was converted by importer to carbine configuration, is chambered in 7.62mm NATO and carries serial N98xx. The right side of the butt socket is marked with the Lion Capital emblem and RIFLE 7.62 mm 2A1 R.F.I. 1966. It is complete with front and rear handguards, ladder rear sight, front and rear sling swivels, and the flash hider with bayonet lug at the muzzle, and it comes with one magazine. The wood is in very good condition with no cracks, the bore is mirror bright, and the rifle is in excellent mechanical condition. The rifle is offered as it is shown.

The Ishapore 2A1 was developed at Rifle Factory Ishapore after the 1962 Sino-Indian War, when India needed a rifle for the new 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge, and it was adopted as a reserve arm in 1963. It keeps the familiar Lee-Enfield action but uses improved steel for the higher-pressure round, a squared box magazine of 10 or 12 rounds and a redesigned extractor for rimless cases. The 2A1 of 1965 replaced the 2A's long-range rear sight with one graduated to 800 meters. About 250,000 were built before production ended in 1974, and the 2A1 is generally regarded as the last bolt-action rifle designed for a regular military force, other than sniper rifles.
