Lot Notes

This Winchester Model 94 carbine is chambered in .32 Winchester Special and carries serial 16662xx on the lower tang. The left side of the barrel is marked MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S. OF AMERICA, WINCHESTER, MODEL 94-32 W.S. and WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL, and the barrel and receiver each carry the WP proof. It is a top-eject pre-64 carbine in the classic configuration, with a round barrel, barrel band, full-length magazine tube, hooded front sight and flat-top leaf rear sight. The barrel and magazine tube hold most of their factory blue. The walnut stock shows dings and scratches on the comb and carries the carved initials A(R?) E L on the right side of the butt, with no cracks visible. Bright bore with strong rifling. The carbine is offered as it is shown.

The Model 1894 was designed by John Browning and introduced by Winchester in 1894. In 1895 it became the first sporting rifle chambered for a smokeless powder cartridge, the .30 WCF later known as the .30-30, and the .32 Winchester Special followed as one of its standard chamberings. Winchester built the rifle at New Haven until 1980, and it became the first sporting rifle to sell more than seven million copies. In mid-1964 Winchester stopped machining the receiver and many small parts from solid steel, which is why collectors separate the earlier pre-64 rifles from later production. Serial number 2,000,000 was presented to President Eisenhower in 1953, so this carbine’s serial places it well within pre-64 production.
