This Finnish M39 Mosin Nagant carries a VKT barrel dated 1941 and stamped D, and it is chambered in 7.62x54R. It carries serial 450xx and is Finnish matching. The receiver is an Izhevsk, tang marked 1905, and it retains its Imperial Russian Tsarist eagle, which has not been ground off or defaced. The bore is in excellent, like new condition and mirror bright, and the rifle retains almost all of its blued finish. The stock shows signs of various old arsenal repairs but is solid, and the rifle is in excellent mechanical condition.
Finland approved the M39 on 14 April 1939, resolving a long dispute between the Army and the Civil Guard over what the service rifle should be, and the rifle took the sight design Harry Mansner developed for the Civil Guard. Like every Finnish rifle of Mosin Nagant lineage, it was built on receivers and bolt parts recycled from earlier Mosin Nagant rifles. Sako made the barrels for its own rifles, while the state depot AV3 assembled roughly 30,300 rifles on barrels from VKT, the State Rifle Factory. A D stamped over the barrel serial shows that the chamber throat was cut for the Finnish D-166 ball cartridge, a 13 gram bullet of .310 inch diameter adopted as the Finnish standard in 1936. On many M39 rifles the Tsarist crest on the receiver was ground off. On this rifle it remains.
