Lot Notes

This Chinese Type 56 carbine, the SKS pattern rifle, is marked to Factory 206 and is chambered in 7.62x39mm. All numbers are matching, the bore is mirror bright, and the rifle is mechanically excellent. No import markings are present. It comes with its original sling. The absence of import marks is consistent with a rifle that entered the United States outside commercial import channels, and it is offered as a plausible veteran bring-back on that basis; the rifle carries no accompanying documentation and its history is not definitively established.

China began producing the SKS as the Type 56 carbine in 1956 with Soviet technical assistance, and roughly eighty Chinese factories eventually tooled up to build it, with the primary production line at the Jianshe Machine Tool Factory. Over nine million were made, with production continuing into the 1980s. Chinese examples differ from Soviet production in using carbon steel receivers rather than the chrome nickel alloy steel the Soviet specification called for, and in a greater proportion of stamped rather than machined parts. Early Chinese carbines were fitted with blade bayonets and later production used the spike type. Chinese arsenals identified their work with a stylized number inside a triangle.
