This Chinese Type 56 SKS is marked Factory 0134 and is chambered in 7.62x39mm. All
serialized numbers match. In place of the standard receiver cover the rifle carries a
scope-mount cover marked Factory 416 and Made in China; the cover is unnumbered, and its
bluing is consistent with the rifle. A Tasco 4×32 scope is fitted to the mount. The bore
is mirror bright, mechanical condition is excellent, and the rifle comes with a sling
and cleaning kit.
The Type 56 carbine is the Chinese-produced version of the Soviet SKS, a self-loading
carbine designed by Sergei Simonov and adopted by the Soviet Army in 1949 for the
7.62x39mm M1943 cartridge. Counting all variants and national production, more than 15
million SKS carbines were built. Chinese arsenals identified their work with numeric
factory codes, and collectors read the surround as a guide to production period: earlier
codes appear within a triangle, while later codes such as 0134 appear within a rectangle
or an oblong. Factory codes were eventually dropped altogether in favor of the exporter's
name. Rifles from the early, middle and late production classes all saw military service.
