This is a Type 2 National Match M1 Garand built on a Springfield Armory receiver, serial 58282xx, chambered in .30-06 Springfield. The receiver serial falls in Springfield Armory’s final postwar serial block, placing the receiver in the mid-1950s. The rifle is unfired since its National Match conversion, and the trigger guard still carries its conversion tag dated 1967, intact. The stock is glass bedded. National Match components include an NM-marked operating rod, an NM stamp on the barrel at the gas cylinder, rear/front sight, a hooded match rear aperture and a narrow front sight blade, and the bolt is a Springfield Armory 6528287-SA. Overall condition is excellent to new old stock, with an even dark gray parkerized finish and a walnut stock and matching handguards with few marks. The stock carries a boxed Department of Defense eagle acceptance stamp on the left side and a circled P proof on the underside of the grip .
In March 1953 Springfield Armory was directed to furnish 800 M1 rifles built for the National Matches, and from 1954 through 1963 it both built new National Match rifles and rebuilt returned ones, improving the specification year by year: an NM gas cylinder in 1958, a half-minute windage rear sight in 1959, glass bedding of the receiver and trigger housing for the 1960 Matches, an NM operating rod in 1961 and a hooded half-minute aperture in 1962. Collectors call the bedded rifles Type 2, and they could be built on receivers from any Springfield serial range. Rebuilt rifles were rebarreled, restocked and glass bedded, and a 1967 Army Materiel Command booklet was still setting the M1 National Match standard, alongside the M14, after the M14 replaced the M1 at the Matches. This rifle’s 1967 tag and glass-bedded stock place it in that later period of the program.
