Lot Notes

This M1 Garand was built by Springfield Armory, serial 27189xx, and is chambered in .30-06 Springfield. Its serial number dates the receiver to approximately March 1944, during Second World War production. The receiver heel is marked U.S. RIFLE CAL. .30 M1 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY with the serial number, and the bolt is a Springfield Armory D28287-2SA bolt. The rifle is mechanically excellent, and the bore is shiny with sharp rifling. The metal carries a gray-green parkerized finish with honest edge wear, and the GI walnut stock and matching walnut handguards show scattered dings and handling marks with no cracks or repairs visible. The rifle comes with an OD web sling, a green scabbard, and a bayonet marked R.I.A. with the flaming bomb and 1909 on one side of the blade and US J62269 on the other, fitted with black ribbed grips. The bayonet blade has been reshaped and sharpened. The rifle is offered as it is shown.

The M1 Garand was designed by John Garand at Springfield Armory and standardized on 9 January 1936, becoming the first autoloading rifle adopted as standard issue by the United States and replacing the bolt-action M1903. It fires .30-06 from an eight-round en bloc clip that ejects once the last round is fired. Springfield Armory began machine production in September 1937, and by 1957 some 5.47 million rifles had been made there and by Winchester, International Harvester and Harrington and Richardson. Garands were overhauled repeatedly over long service lives, so the maker on the receiver identifies the receiver rather than every part fitted to it. Springfield Armory’s wartime production ran until October 1945, and a March 1944 receiver comes from the period when the armory was turning out well over eighty thousand rifles a month.
