This M1 Garand was produced at Springfield Armory in January 1942 and carries the six digit serial 4538xx. It is chambered in .30-06 Springfield. The rifle has a 63 SA barrel, a Springfield Armory operating rod and a Springfield Armory trigger group, and the stock carries a circled P proof and a Department of Defense acceptance stamp. The stock shows dings and handling marks but is solid, and the rifle retains almost all of its arsenal Parkerized finish. The bore is mirror bright and mechanical condition is excellent. The rifle comes with a web sling.
Springfield Armory’s M1 production ran hard through the first year of American involvement in the Second World War. By the end of November 1941 the armory had reached serial 401529, by the end of December 429811, and by the end of January 1942 serial 462737, so a six digit rifle from that month was built within weeks of the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. Production accelerated from there, passing 542494 by the end of March and 691401 by the end of June. On the stock, the circled P is the original factory proof marking, distinct from the plain P in a square box that arsenals applied when a rifle passed through a post-war overhaul. Many M1s were rebuilt after the war at facilities including Springfield Armory, Rock Island, Augusta, Benicia, San Antonio, Ogden and Anniston, each of which marked its work, and Springfield produced replacement components between 1945 and 1948 to support those programs.
