This M1 Garand was built by Springfield Armory, serial 30636xx, chambered in .30-06 Springfield, and comes from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. The receiver heel is marked U.S. RIFLE CAL. .30 M1 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY with the serial number, and the bolt is a Springfield Armory D28287-2SA bolt. The receiver carries a gray parkerized finish, with the barrel and gas cylinder in a darker finish, and the rifle sits in fresh walnut with matching walnut handguards. The left side of the stock carries the CMP eagle cartouche, and the gas cylinder is stamped CMP. It comes in its CMP box with the CMP M1 rifle manual, one en bloc clip, a chamber flag and the CMP armorer and inventory tags. The receiver is populated with a new modern barrel, the rifle has not been shot other than CMP test fire. The rifle is offered as it is shown.
The M1 Garand was designed by John Garand at Springfield Armory and standardized on 9 January 1936, becoming the first autoloading rifle adopted as standard issue by the United States and replacing the bolt-action M1903. It fires .30-06 from an eight-round en bloc clip that ejects once the last round is fired. Springfield Armory began machine production in September 1937, and by 1957 some 5.47 million rifles had been made there and by Winchester, International Harvester and Harrington and Richardson. The Civilian Marksmanship Program, chartered by Congress in 1996 as successor to the Office of the Director of Civilian Marksmanship, sells U.S. government surplus M1 rifles to qualified buyers. Its rifles are inspected by CMP armorers before sale, carry no import marks, and are sold by grade, with the receiver maker the only part guaranteed when a maker is chosen.
