Where Each AK Comes From

Romania’s PM md. 63 is the stamped-receiver AKM made at Cugir. The ones here are built on new U.S.-made receivers from original md. 63 surplus parts kits, and each listing says whether the trunnion, bolt and carrier numbers match and whether the barrel is the original chrome-lined Romanian one or a new U.S. replacement.

Bulgaria’s Arsenal factory builds the SLR series; the SLR-106 models, including the short SLR-106U pistol, are chambered in 5.56×45. Izhmash sold the Saiga as a sporting Kalashnikov until U.S. sanctions stopped imports in July 2014, and many have since been converted to standard AK configuration. IWI’s Galil ACE runs a Kalashnikov-derived long-stroke piston.

Every rifle and pistol is graded and photographed individually. The listing you click is the one that ships, and when it sells it’s gone.

Common Questions

How does buying a firearm online from Old Steel Arsenal work?Every firearm ships to a licensed FFL dealer of your choice — pick your dealer at checkout and we handle the transfer paperwork and shipping. See our FFL & Shipping page for the full process.
What's the difference between an AK-47 and an AKM?The AKM, adopted in 1959, is the modernized AK-47: a stamped sheet-metal receiver in place of the milled one, lighter overall, with a slant muzzle brake. Most semi-auto AKs sold today follow the AKM pattern, the Romanian md. 63 included. Both fire 7.62×39.
What calibers do your AKs come in?Most are 7.62×39, the original AK cartridge. The Bulgarian SLR-106 models are 5.56×45 NATO. Each listing states the caliber and which magazine comes with the gun.
