This M1 Garand has a receiver made by Harrington & Richardson and is chambered in .30-06 Springfield. It carries serial 55283xx. The barrel is Springfield Armory marked and dated 8-64, and the bolt, trigger group and operating rod are also Springfield Armory parts. The stock carries the Department of Defense acceptance cartouche on its left side. The bore is mirror bright with sharp rifling. It comes with a leather sling, and a cleaning kit and tool are stored in the stock.
Harrington & Richardson built M1 rifles in the 1950s, beginning deliveries at about the same time as International Harvester. It received a contract for 100,000 rifles on April 3, 1952, followed by an order for 31,000 more on June 25, 1952. Production ceased in May 1956, by which time 428,600 rifles had been delivered. H&R was assigned serial blocks of 4,660,001 to 4,800,000 and 5,488,247 to 5,793,847, plus a small third block for about 400 rifles made in mid-1956. Most H&R stocks were stamped with the Defense Acceptance Stamp, a spread eagle under three stars. The Springfield Armory barrel dated 8-64 on this rifle postdates the end of H&R production, so the rifle was rebarreled after it left the factory.
