The Mini-14 was designed by L. James Sullivan and William B. Ruger and introduced by Sturm, Ruger & Company in 1973, a scaled down take on the M14 layout chambered for .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO. It works by a gas operated short stroke fixed piston driving a rotating bolt, and factory magazines have been offered from five up to thirty rounds. Ruger has offered the rifle in stainless steel or blued finish, with hardwood, synthetic or laminated stocks. By Ruger’s own serial number records the 181 prefix begins at 181-07488 in 1978, reaches 181-48351 in 1979 and 181-84879 in 1980, though the company notes these figures are a point of reference only because rifles were not necessarily produced in serial number order.
