This Russian Mosin Nagant M91 was produced at the Sestroretsk arsenal in 1916 and is
chambered in 7.62x54R. The rifle is non-matching. The bore is dark but the rifling is
very strong, and the rifle is mechanically very good.
The Model 1891 Mosin Nagant was the standard Russian infantry rifle of the Imperial
period and served through the First World War. Imperial production was concentrated at
three state arsenals. Tula and Izhevsk were the two main factories and between them
produced the majority of the rifles that served Russia in both world wars. Sestroretsk,
sometimes rendered Sestroryetsk, was the third, producing M91 rifles near St. Petersburg
from 1893 to 1918, and its rifles are encountered far less often than Tula or Izhevsk
examples. Rifles built during the Imperial period carry Russian arsenal markings and
dating on the receiver, and a 1916 date places this rifle in the First World War years
of Imperial production, which ended with the Revolution.
