This Colt Single Action Army is a Third Generation revolver manufactured in 1992,
chambered in .45 Colt with a 5.5 inch barrel and a nickel plated finish. It carries
serial number SA969xx and is fitted with walnut grips bearing Colt medallions. It is
unfired and unmodified, and the cylinder carries no turn ring. The revolver is new in
box, with the factory Colt blue box and all paperwork intact.
The Single Action Army has been built in three distinct generations. First Generation
production ran from 1873 to 1941 across roughly 357,859 revolvers, Second Generation from
1955 to 1975 across about 70,000 in the 1001SA to 73319SA serial range, and Third
Generation production began in 1976 with a new serial series starting at 800000SA. Third
Generation revolvers are distinguished mechanically by a changed barrel and frame thread
pitch and by a cylinder base pin bushing that was no longer a separate slip-in piece but
was permanently press-fit as part of the cylinder. Third Generation serial numbering
moved over time from an SA suffix to an SA prefix and later to an S prefix with an A
suffix. The SA prefix carried by this revolver corresponds to the middle of that
progression. The revolver has been offered in the three standard barrel lengths of four
and three quarter, five and a half, and seven and a half inches, with .45 Colt as the
standard chambering.
