The M39 was adopted in 1939 as a standardized Finnish service rifle, a compromise between the Army and the Civil Guard that drew on the earlier M/28-30 and added the semi-pistol grip stock. Finland built the rifles on Imperial Russian Mosin Nagant receivers, many with the tsarist crest ground off, fitting new Finnish barrels of 26.96 inches, windage adjustable front sights and rear sights reworked from the M28/30. SAKO, Tikkakoski and VKT handled production, with roughly 96,800 rifles built after the Winter War for the Continuation War. SAKO’s name, Suojeluskuntain Ase- ja Konepaja Oy, means Civil Guard Gun and Machining Works; the firm grew out of a 1919 Helsinki workshop set up to repair private arms and recondition Russian military rifles, became independent in 1921 and moved to Riihimaki in 1927. Its gear wheel emblem marks the barrels, sights, small parts and stocks it produced.
