This Finnish M39 carries a SAKO barrel dated 1942 with a D stamp, along with the SAKO gear cartouche. It is chambered in 7.62x54R. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and the rifle is mechanically excellent. The stock shows an old arsenal style repair.
Mass production of the M39 ran from 1941 to 1945, with SAKO delivering 60,000 rifles during the war and Asevarikko 3, the state weapons depot, assembling a further 30,300 using barrels supplied by VKT. SAKO’s M39 deliveries in 1942 amounted to 4,000 rifles. As with earlier Finnish models, much of the rifle was built from parts recycled from older Mosin Nagant rifles, including receivers, the majority of bolt parts, and magazine components, so a Finnish M39 commonly pairs a wartime Finnish barrel and stock with a receiver of considerably earlier manufacture. SAKO takes its name from Suojeluskuntain Ase- ja Konepaja, the Civil Guard arms and machine workshop founded in 1921, and its gear wheel emblem appears on receivers, barrels, stocks, and small parts of its production. The D stamp on the barrel denotes a chamber throat dimensioned for the Finnish D166 ball cartridge of .310 inch diameter.
