This Finnish M39 Mosin Nagant is chambered in 7.62x54R and is an example of the No Maker / 48 variation. It is assembled on a 1915 Izhevsk Imperial Russian hex receiver, with an unmarked Finnish M39 barrel numbered 2191xx bearing the 48 marking, the boxed SA property stamp of the Finnish Army, and small Finnish inspection and acceptance marks. Unlike standard wartime M39 barrels it carries no SAKO, VKT, Sk.Y, Tikkakoski or B maker marking, though the cocking knob on the bolt is SAKO marked. The rifle is non matching. Mechanical condition is excellent and the bore is bright with sharp rifling.
The Finnish Army and Civil Guard adopted the M39 in 1939. Barrels came from SAKO, from VKT and from Tikkakoski, and Belgian B marked barrels were also used in Finnish assembled rifles, while the receivers were reused Russian hex receivers, round receiver examples being unusual. The rifle is chambered in 7.62x54R with a .310 inch groove diameter, carries a pistol grip stock, and uses a rear sight in the manner of the M28/30 with a leaf numbered from 1.5 to 20, the front sight standing about an inch back from the muzzle. Collector references recognize several later production groups carrying no maker mark, assembled from the late 1960s into the early 1970s, among them rifles marked No Maker with 48 and others with no maker and no date. These later rifles were put together after the war, in some cases from cut down M91s. The meaning of the 48 marking is not documented and should not be taken as a 1948 production date. A receiver made at Izhevsk in 1915 paired with a barrel fitted in this later period illustrates the Finnish practice of rebuilding Mosin actions, roughly half a century separating the two.
