This Finnish M39 Mosin Nagant is chambered in 7.62x54R and carries a barrel dated 1970 with no manufacturer mark on the barrel shank, the configuration collectors know as a no maker or sneak M39. It carries serial 3055xx and the rifle is not matching. Overall condition is excellent, close to new old stock, and the stock has an attractive tiger stripe figure. The bore is excellent, showing no fresh carbon or brass fouling, and the chamber still carries a layer of old grease, so the rifle appears unfired apart from a depot test fire. An excellent condition original Finnish green sling is included.
The M39 was adopted in 1939 as a standardized Finnish service rifle, a compromise between the Army and the Civil Guard that drew on the earlier M/28-30 and added changes the Army wanted, among them the semi-pistol grip stock. Finland built the rifles on Imperial Russian Mosin Nagant receivers, many with the tsarist crest carefully ground off, and fitted them with new Finnish barrels of 26.96 inches, windage adjustable front sights and rear sights reworked from the M28/30. SAKO, Tikkakoski and VKT, the state rifle factory, handled production, with roughly 96,800 rifles built after the Winter War for service in the Continuation War. Small numbers were then assembled from leftover parts between the late 1960s and 1973, bringing the total to about 102,000. Those late rifles were put together at the AV1 depot from stored components, which is why the barrel shank carries no maker stamp and why the numbers do not match.
