This Mosin Nagant 91/30 is chambered in 7.62x54R and is built on an Izhevsk hex receiver
dated 1927. All numbers match as refurbished. The rifle retains its original sling. The
rifling is strong and pronounced with darkened lands, and the rifle is mechanically
excellent.
The M1891 Mosin Nagant was adapted early in its service life for mounted troops: the
infantry pattern proved too long, and the answer was the M1891 Dragoon, essentially an
M1891 with a shorter barrel and an updated upper handguard. Soviet arsenals continued
building Dragoons through the 1920s, with production at Izhevsk documented in 1927. The
M91/30 pattern that followed in 1930 was itself developed from the Dragoon, so a receiver
dated 1927 predates the 91/30 by three years and was originally built to the earlier
pattern before being brought to 91/30 configuration. Izhevsk marked its work with a bow
and arrow within a square before 1928, changing to a star thereafter. Receivers of this
era are the hexagonal type. The round receiver was designed at Izhevsk, entered serial
production there in 1935, and was taken up at Tula in 1936, which switched over completely
during that year, so hex receivers mark the earlier phase of 91/30 production and its
predecessors. These rifles are chambered in 7.62x54R, feed from a five round magazine and
have four groove right hand twist rifling.
