This Soviet SKS was made at the Tula arsenal in 1953 and is chambered in 7.62x39mm. It carries serial RH2125xx. All numbers match, although some appear to have been force matched, and no refurbishment marking is visible. The metal wears a high gloss blued finish. The bore is mirror bright and the rifle appears to be unfired. It comes with its sling and the cleaning kit stored in the stock, along with the factory manual, a stripper clip, an ammunition pouch, an oiler and an oiler pouch.
The SKS is Sergei Simonov’s semi-automatic carbine for the 7.62x39mm M43 cartridge. It was manufactured at Tula Arsenal from 1949 to 1958 and at the Izhevsk Arsenal from 1953 to 1954, with Soviet output totalling about 2.7 million carbines. The rifle feeds from a fixed ten-round box magazine enclosed in the receiver, loaded by hand or from a stripper clip that seats in the bolt carrier. A folding bayonet sits under the barrel, and a cleaning kit is stored in a trapdoor in the buttstock, with a cleaning rod running under the barrel. The SKS replaced the Mosin Nagant as the standard Soviet infantry rifle by the end of the 1940s, and through the 1950s the AK-47 gradually took its place in front-line service.
