Lot Notes

This is an Egyptian Hakim rifle chambered in 8mm Mauser, serial 66xx, and dated 1957, which puts it in the early years of the rifle’s production. The visible serial numbers are matching. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and the rifle is mechanically excellent. It comes with its original sling. The rifle is offered as it is shown.

The Hakim is the Egyptian service rifle of the 1950s, and it is a Swedish design wearing Egyptian markings. Sweden’s Ljungman AG-42 had introduced a gas system with no piston and no operating rod at all: gas tapped from the barrel is carried back through a tube directly against the bolt carrier, which is both the simplest way to work a self-loading action and the same principle that would later be built into the AR-15. Egypt bought the tooling outright and put the rifle into production at Factory 54 at Maadi, rechambered from the Swedish 6.5x55mm to the 8mm Mauser cartridge the Egyptian army already used, and lengthened and strengthened to suit it. Roughly 70,000 were built. The Egyptians improved on the Swedish original in two ways a shooter notices immediately: an adjustable gas regulator, so the rifle can be tuned to the ammunition in front of it or shut down altogether, and a substantial muzzle brake that takes a good deal of the sting out of a full-power 8mm cartridge in a rifle with no recoil buffer. It feeds ten rounds from a fixed magazine, loaded from the top with two five-round stripper clips through the open action. The rear sight ladder is graduated in Eastern Arabic numerals, as are the receiver markings, which is part of the character of the thing.
