Switzerland was the first nation to adopt the P220, taking it into Swiss Army service in 1975 as the Pistole 75, replacing the Pistole 49. The design came from SIG, Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft, and Swiss production was carried out at Neuhausen am Rheinfall. SIG separately partnered with J. P. Sauer & Sohn of Eckernförde so that the pistol could also be built on German soil, because Swiss export law was strict enough to limit sales abroad. The P75 kept the basic structure of the P210 but replaced its all milled construction with a pressed slide and a forged alloy frame, a considerable saving in cost. The Swiss military version is distinguished from commercial P220s by its heel mounted magazine release at the rear of the magazine well and by its lanyard ring. Army pistols carry serial numbers prefixed with the letter A, following the convention used on the Swiss Army’s P210s.
