This AMT Backup is chambered in .380 ACP and is the original single action only pattern with a manual safety, marked AMT. It is in excellent, like new condition, with no visible rust and no significant wear. The bore is excellent and like new, and mechanical condition is excellent. It comes with four magazines and a generic nylon holster.
The Backup was first manufactured by the Ordnance Manufacturing Corporation of El Monte, California, with production beginning in 1978. OMC built an initial run before Arcadia Machine & Tool acquired the tooling and took the design over, and AMT went on to make the pistol at El Monte, Covina and Irwindale in California. AMT itself had been established at Irwindale in 1977, and its guns were distinctive for being made from stainless steel rather than the ordinary steel then used for most firearms. The Backup was among the first of the ultra compact semi automatic pistols, an all stainless design measuring five inches long and weighing eighteen ounces, with fixed sights and, in .380 ACP, a five round magazine. Over its life the type was offered in calibers ranging from .22 LR up to .45 ACP. The original pattern used a single action only trigger with a manual safety, while later versions moved to a double action only mechanism. The line passed to Galena Industries of Sturgis, South Dakota in 1998, which continued production until November 2001, after which Crusader Gun Company, later High Standard Manufacturing of Houston, Texas, acquired the business.
