Lot Notes

This Portuguese contract K98k was manufactured by Mauser in 1937 and is chambered in
8mm Mauser. All numbers match apart from the bolt catch and the rear barrel band. It is
accompanied by a matching bayonet. The bore is slightly darkened with strong rifling,
and the rifle is mechanically excellent.
Portugal ordered 100,000 Kar98k rifles from Mauser Oberndorf in 1937. The first 50,000
were delivered as the m/937 in standard Wehrmacht production configuration, while the
remaining 50,000 became the m/937-A, which altered elements such as the front sight and
the sling swivels. Rifles from this contract carry a Portuguese crest on the receiver
and 1937 dating even though deliveries ran into 1938, and their proof marks follow
standard Wehrmacht patterns. A further contract in 1941 produced the m/937-B in standard
German military configuration, of which roughly 60,000 were built and 10,000 were
requisitioned by German forces. Because Portugal stayed largely out of combat operations
during the Second World War, rifles from these contracts are often found in better
condition than comparable German-issued examples.
