This Gewehr 43 is marked duv 44 and is chambered in 8mm Mauser. The bolt carrier does
not match the rifle. The stock carries an old duffle cut that has been repaired, and the
front of the upper handguard shows signs of repair. The barrel is darkened with pitting,
with the rifling still visible. Various German eagle acceptance stamps, commonly known to
collectors as Waffenamt marks, are present on the stock and metal parts. The rifle
mechanically functions and comes with an original leather sling. A duffle cut is a
transverse cut through the stock, a feature usually associated with rifles sectioned to
fit inside a duffle bag for shipment home and rejoined afterward.
The duv code identifies Berlin-Lubecker Maschinenfabrik of Lubeck, which built the K98k
from 1936 to 1942, the Gewehr 41 from 1943, and the G43 and K43 through 1944 and 1945.
Ordnance codes of this kind were required by the German Army to mask a manufacturer’s
identity. Berlin-Lubecker took up G43 production in early 1944 as it ceased Gewehr 41
work, changed the designation from G43 to K43 late in 1944, and changed its code from duv
to qve in 1945, so a rifle marked duv 44 and designated G43 sits in that maker’s earlier
window of production. The Gewehr 43 is a gas-operated semi-automatic rifle chambered in
7.92x57mm and fed by a detachable ten-round box magazine.
