This Turkish Mauser M38 is chambered in 8mm Mauser, is marked K.Kale and Ankara, and
carries a 1943 date. The stock is solid and in excellent condition, and the rifle
retains more than 90 percent of what is likely an arsenal refurbishment finish. The bore
is mostly bright with strong rifling and the rifle is mechanically excellent. It comes
with a bayonet.
The Model 1938, also called the Model 38 Türk Mavzeri, was a short-rifle standardization
of Turkey’s varied Mauser inventory, drawing on the Model 1893, Model 1903, Gewehr 88,
Gewehr 98 and Czechoslovak vz.98/22 actions and bringing them to a uniform 7.92 pattern.
The work was carried out at the Kirikkale Armaments Factory between 1932 and 1950, and
more than 150,000 rifles were converted to 7.92. Turkey had standardized on the 7.9mm
cartridge in 1927, refurbishing its older rifles between 1927 and 1929 and changing
markings from Arabic to Roman script at the same time. From 1939 Turkey also
manufactured rifles of its own design at Kirikkale. Because the program retrofitted
rifles of varied origin to a single specification, receiver origins are sometimes unclear
on these rifles and mixed-origin parts are ordinary rather than exceptional.
